PSHE & Character

Graham School was the first school in North Yorkshire to sign the PSHE Association’s Charter reflecting our commitment to educating the whole student and not concentrating purely on academic outcomes.

The ‘Character Programme’ is the umbrella term under which Graham School delivers our citizenship, Careers and Aspirations, SMSC, British Values and social and health education to all year groups. It is a programme which builds, year on year, to cover every subject that students need to know to prepare them for life beyond the academic confines of school:

  • Being me: understanding who I am and how I came to be the person I am and what my aspirations and goals are for the future
  • Diversity: understanding other people’s point of view (this is also linked to citizenship)
  • Money Matters: understanding personal finance and preparing for independent life
  • Risk: understanding different forms of risk in health, attitudes and behaviour. This includes our Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco education programme.
  • Relationships: Understanding how to successfully form and maintain healthy relationships. This covers friendships and work relationships as well as romantic and sexual relationships.

In Years 7, 8 and 9 our Philosophy and Ethics (PSHE) curriculum is based on the PSHE Associations model which covers Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and sex and Economic Wellbeing

Philosophy and Ethics (PSHE) is delivered to year 7, 8 and 9 in a discrete one hour lesson every week. Year 7, 8 and 9 also have two 30 minute form session every week which are devoted to Character Education, the umbrella term for SMSC, British Values, Careers and aspirations and citizenship. In addition, Year 10 and 11 also have two 30 minute sessions during form time dedicated to Character Development. Year 10 and 11 also have aspects of the course delivered to them through drop down days; in particular Sex and Relationships.

Assemblies are also instrumental to our deliver of PSHE/ Character Education and they are used to deliver key messages about acceptance, liberty, social intelligence, diversity and risk taking behaviours.  We often have outside speakers who deliver important messages to our students, such as the local police explaining the causes and effects of ant- social behaviour and the local road safety officer explaining how students can keep themselves safe.

As part of the discrete Philosophy and Ethics sessions and the Form time sessions we also cover the statutory RS coverage for KS3 and KS4.  Students in Year 7, 8 and 9 all look at the religious beliefs of two different religions across each year group. Christianity features across all year groups and in year 10 and 11 tutor time some aspects of all the religions studied are revisited where applicable.   

Our Character (PSHE) Programme is a vital part of our mission to ensure student wellbeing; it is supported by a range of other services including Contraceptive and Sexual Health drop-in, an onsite nurse to address issues of Health and Wellbeing and SRE and a team of Student Supporters Officers who have been trained to provide emotional support to students in difficulties.
